Polynesian Cultural Center

Playing tourist this Saturday, we decided to take a nice drive to the Polynesian Cultural Center in La`ie, Hawaii. We took our kids to the PCC this year for their Pacific Island Studies semester in social studies. That was NOTHING compared to the tour we took yesterday! The villages opened at noon and dinner was at 5pm. 5 hours of village exploring was enough to validate my overindulgence during the dinner. It was H-O-T and humid. We are thinking that next weekend we will visit Kualoa Ranch! Stay tuned for that post!

Although actually in Melanesia, the Polynesian Cultural Center features Fiji because their culture is similar to the Polynesians. (Not looking at the very nicely sculpted and shirtless gentlemen demonstrating the ancient dance of these islands).

Tahiti's traditional rhythmic hip-swinging dance is, unfortunately, commonly associated with the term "Hula Girl." (Still not looking...)

Definitely NOOOOOOT looking... eh hum!

The best "seat" in the house is on top of dad's shoulders!

Let's go paddling in an ancient vessel! We almost had a heart attack when he tried to climb in it.

Mmmm! Strawberry smoothie in a pineapple! Yummy!

I'm in utter shock that my son has already eaten 2 WHOLE taro dinner rolls!

Neither of us are very good at the poi balls... The whole lack of hand-eye coordination is unfortunately genetic... poor kid!

"Bula Vinaka!"

Listening intently to ensure minimal embarrassment.

Mr. Independent

Lately Joseph has been wanting to do EVERYTHING all by himself. :( We moved to a place that only has a shower and he is in love with taking a shower. He washes himself and even rinses off without any help from mom or dad. He even wants his privacy when he goes potty! I'm really sad because he's only 4 and I thought I had a little more time to baby him. Perhaps it's time to have another.... Just joking! No thanks! I'll wait a little longer before that happens...

The beachfront condo is nicer than we thought it was going to be. Wai`anae is SO country, though! We went grocery shopping and forgot to get a few things. It took us like, 20 minutes to get to the nearest market! I am NOT a country girl! The great thing is, however, that we can roll out of bed and practically fall into the ocean. We are SO close to the water that it calls hourly, "I'm right here! What are you doing watching TV? Put down that textbook. Stop correcting those papers and come to the beach NOW!!!" The guilt trip is too much and we've been going daily. It is the first time since marching band camp that I've had a decent tan.

Party at the ABCRI

The day started off kind of shaky. Taryn was ill, my mother didn't feel well, and Catalina was having difficulty getting Shae, her son. Even though they wouldn't be able to make it, we pressed on. We had to load everything up in the car (took forever) and head to Foodland for some ice. Then we got to the race track and started setting up. Good thing we bought 3 cases of water, 2 cases of juice, and 3 cases of Capri Sun because it was a scorcher for sure! I also spent the evening prior to the party cutting up fruit. We can't have all junk food, after all! I bought strawberries, pineapple, grapes, and watermelon but the strawberries were rancid. That's the thing about Costco; their produce is a little unreliable. In any case, the first groups trickled in slowly and I began to worry. Fortunately, a sudden barrage of guests arrived and I was instantly relieved. The day sure went by fast. Joseph's school friends seemed to have a great time. I think everyone had a great time! We had a lot of food left over so we'll be eating pancit, mochiko chicken, and fried rice until the end of July but that's okay.

A natural at the wheel!

Though formidable, these two are no match for Ian and his Grandpa who smoked them on the very first run!

The Popes, Stutesmans, and Hernandezs at the start line! They're ready to burn some rubber!

Alyssa, Cailin, and Nadine are the girls to beat!

Cora and her Daddy at the start line.

Brian and his son, Nicholas in matching Lego Tees! So cute!

They're a handsome pair of boys, for sure!

He's a natural racer, that Jayden!

Even though it is so hot, he's having such a blast!

Wayne, Stacy, and Nine.

Tino, Cheryl, and Cid pausing for a family portrait.

Yvette and her beautiful family in line for some serious grinds!

Hunka, hunka burning Wayne!

Alyssa and Mom resting during lunch.

Catching a quick bite before she's out to the track again!

The Popes

The Fredericksons

The Cannistras

Admittedly, I am not the best driver in the world.

Hugs and kisses to Nine!

Look! My FIRST lollipop, ever!

Menden and Joseph enjoy the balloons together.

50th State FUN!

My husband is such a cutie!

At first Joseph didn't want to wear this shirt, but then his father told him that it was cool because it showed his muscles. Joseph liked it after that.

I was scared of riding the Ferris Wheel and I think it rubbed off on Joseph! He was fine until I started to freak out!

Helicopter Riding

This race car is sponsored by the University of Hawaii!

We went to the 50th State Fair recently. It was a lot of fun! Well... it was expensive fun and that's never really fun, is it? I was unpleasantly surprised at how much it cost us to get in! $5 a person! There went $15 right there. THEN each ride was like, $4! We ate there and that cost another fortune. It was still pretty fun because there was a pig race and we watched that for a while. The pigs are so cute! I begged Joe to get a pink pig for me. One with a super curly tail! We'll see if he delivers... At the end we only had a few more dollars in cash so I had to choose between cotton candy and a caramel apple. I opted for the former. I've heard that the Minnesota State Fair is ah-MAZING! I'd like to check that one out.

Happy Birthday, Joseph!

Another year has raced by us and Joseph is now FOUR years old! My goodness! I can't believe it! At school I dropped off Sugar Free Rainbow Popsicles for Joseph's class and they sang Happy Birthday to him. I know he loooooooooved the attention! Then when we picked him up from school we drove to meet Grandma at Chuck-E-Cheeses where we ate tons of sausage pizza, drank lots of sugary fruit punch, and played a lot of cool games. Joseph traded his tickets in for a pair of star sunglasses and a small noisey (thanks grandma) toy. When we got back home, Joseph opened his presents and played with them until it was time for a bath and bed. I had to finish a paper for school (major bummer) but Dad gave him a bath, read to him, and tucked him in. Joseph is really looking forward to his birthday party this weekend! Lots of friends and fast racing!

Funeral of a Friend

This evening, accompanied by Destiny, I attended the funeral of Kristin Claudi. All I could think when I was there was, "This is ridiculous!" This beautiful woman was only 28 years old. How can that possibly happen? According to her family, it is still a medical mystery. It was incredible to see how many people were there! We arrived at about 5:30 (service started at 6pm) and there was already a line out of the hall. Her husband and his family started the receiving line followed by her mother, father, brother, sister and extended family. Her mother said, "At least she had a full life and was doing what she loved." I heard someone else say that "she went out like a light" and I guess that means that she was so active and suddenly passed instead of slowly suffering. That is comforting to know. I wasn't expecting the memorial to have an open-casket and it was really difficult to see her glowing, young face resting so peacefully. She had a flower resting on her ear just like I remember seeing in high school. I don't really remember ever seeing her upset beacuse she was always very happy and lively. I suspect that is why she was such an engaging teacher. I don't remember her ever speaking ill of others. She was such a classy person. I'm so sad and baffled. I'm speechless and fearful. The Vice Principal of Moanalua Elementary read a poem called "When Tomorrow Starts Without Me." I thought I was going to explode with sorrow!

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me
By David Romano

When tomorrow starts without me, and I'm not there to see.
If the sun should rise and find your eyes, all filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry, the way you did today,
While thinking of the many things we never got to say.

I know how much you love me, as much as I love you..
And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me too..
But when tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand..
An angel came and called my name and took me by the hand,
It seemed my place was ready - In Heaven far above,
and that I'd have to leave behind, those things I dearly love..

But as I turned to walk away, a tear fell from my eye.
For all of life, I'd always thought, I didn't want to die.
I had so much to live for, so much yet to do,
It seemed almost impossible, that I was leaving you..
I thought of all the yesterdays, the good ones and the bad..
I thought of all the love we shared, and how much fun we had..
If I could relive yesterday, just even for a while,
I'd say goodbye, then kiss you ‘til I saw that special smile..

But then I fully realized, that it could never be,
'Cause emptiness and memories, would take the place of me.
And when I thought of all those things, I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did, my heart was filled with sorrow. .
But when I walked through Heaven's gates, I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me, From his great & golden throne,

He said, "This is eternity, and all I've promised you.
Today your life on Earth is past, but here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last,
and since each day is the same day, there's no longing for the past. .
But you have been so faithful, so trusting and so true,
Though there were some times you did some things you shouldn't do. .

But you have been forgiven, and now at last you're free,
So come and take me by the hand, and share my life with me.."
So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart,
for every time you think of me, I'll be right there - in your Heart..
