Anniversary

March 5, 2009 was the first anniversary of my father's death. I brought flowers to his grave. It was such a beautiful day. I thought about how difficult his life was and how his generosity seemed to have no end. He was a single father with 3 ungrateful kids. We never went hungry. We always had clothes to wear and a roof over our heads.

I remembered all the friends that he had and how we couldn't go anywhere without running into at least a handful of people who knew him. As a matter of fact, I finally went to the bank to close his account and the teller greeted me with, "Eh! How's your dad?" She knew him since he had done his banking at the McCully branch 20 years ago. Now all the way in Kapolei, she still remembers his gregarious personality. I'll probably meet another person like him but he'll continue to inspire me.

I feel the most fortunate because I feel like I knew him so well. Even after I got married and moved away, I still stayed at his apartment before I had Joseph. It felt like a sleepover. He still spoiled me and made such a fuss over me. At night, he'd come in to my room and make sure the blanket was still over my legs. He made my favorite foods and made sure that I had everything that I wanted. I still remember the smell of the apartment, the sheets, and the bathroom. Everything smelled so clean and safe.

He was a really great cook, too. He made the BEST shoyu chicken, Portuguese bean soup, and chili. My other favorites were his fried rice, hot dogs, chow mein, chow fun, chicken long rice... actually, I could go on and on. He was an amazing cook.
My dad was awesome! I'm lucky to have been able to spend so much time with him.

Memories

This is Joseph at 1.5 years old. This was his second Christmas card picture.

I think Joseph was about a year around this time. It was his first sugar free popsicle!

I think he's under one in this picture. I remember being miffed when I saw that his sweet, clean head was being defiled by his fathers sweaty hat!

He's about 6 months old in this picture. He was at that phase where kids put EVERYTHING in their mouths. I remember being totally grossed out by all the sand in his mouth. He didn't seem to mind at ALL!

I think Joseph is like 3-4 months at this time. We really loved this "exersaucer" because we got it for such a steal at the NEX. I think we had `em down to like, $35.00! Have you ever thought about what babies think about us when we try to make them laugh. I wonder if he thought we were weird for speaking for the puppet. Like, "Uh, Mom. You're not a talking lizard! What do you think you're doing?"

Joseph is 4 months at this time. It was in October- his first Halloween costume!

Here's Joseph's first Christmas card picture. I remember that this outfit was 6-12 months... notice how he is practically spilling out of it! More to love, if you ask me!

I think the thing that I didn't realize before I had baby was that they don't come out smiling. Joseph looked so sad sometimes. I used to try to make him laugh but nothing... Fortunately for me, he has learned how to smile and laugh. He's really making up for all that time that he didn't know how!

These were flowers for Auntie Abby's baby shower.

Hopefully having happy dreams. He used to LIVE in this swing! Especially when we were remodeling the kitchen.

He seems so small in his big crib!
